With the 2023 Toyota Tundra and Ford Maverick hybrid, it looks like hybrid trucks are here to stay. And now, it looks like Toyota’s midsize truck is getting in on the action. The teased 2024 Tacoma appears to sport i-FORCE MAX badging. Meaning that it will be one of the latest pickup trucks to get the hybrid treatment.

Does the Toyota Tacoma have a hybrid engine?

Currently, the Tacoma truck only has a four-cylinder engine and an optional V6. The base four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-foot of torque, and the V6 offers 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma can feel a bit underpowered compared to other midsize trucks.

The lack of a hybrid Tacoma looks like it’s going to change for the 2024 model year. In a recent teaser, this pickup truck was shown off with hybrid badging. While the hybrid engine will likely be the same 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 i-FORCE MAX featured in the Tundra, it’s unlikely it will make the same amount of power.

Still, for the redesigned Toyota Tacoma, it would be quite a disappointment if Toyota didn’t offer an updated line of powertrains.

The base engine could also be a hybrid power plant. The Hybrid Max is found in the Toyota Crown, and it makes 340 hp. Toyota has not released information if that will be the case or not; the brand has non-hybrid four-cylinder engines that it could use.

When will the redesigned Tacoma be released?

The Japanese automaker has not revealed when its new midsize truck will hit dealerships. Initially, we expected to see the new Toyota Tacoma hybrid in all its glory earlier this week. Instead, we got a picture of the tailgate for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.

The long wait might be a disappointment to some. After all, it’s been years since Toyota’s small truck has gotten a full update. It does look like the long wait for a redesigned Tacoma will be over soon.

Toyota is definitely a brand known for doing things slowly. And that is reflected with how old the Tacoma and even the 4Runner SUV are. They are some of the oldest new vehicles that you can find on the market.

A new Toyota midsize truck is coming

The next-gen Toyota Tacoma is coming. And it should bring a much-needed refresh to this pickup. If you’ve been in a 2023 Tacoma, you might have noticed things can feel a bit dated. That old-school feel probably works for true truck enthusiasts, but other consumers are likely attracted to something shinier.

According to Car and Driver, it won’t be surprising if the 2024 Tacoma hybrid shares a lot of its looks with the current-gen Tundra. Meaning that it will look more aggressive and certainly beefier.

Hopefully, in the coming weeks and months, Toyota will drop more teasers of the redesigned Tacoma. Allowing us to get a better picture of what to expect from this model.
