Toyota has been a bit slow to warm up to the electric vehicle craze, but it seems the brand is full speed ahead now. Today in Japan, Toyota finally released the rest of the battery electric vehicle lineup everyone has been waiting for. While most of these are just concept vehicles, it is still a step in the right direction. Take a look at the Pickup EV concept that looks a lot like the Toyota Tacoma and the Compact Cruiser that mimics the design of the FJ Cruiser.

Toyota has always had a strong, well-liked lineup of vehicles. Akio Toyoda announced the new lineup today from Japan, discussing the strategy for battery electric vehicles. He noted these battery EVs “represent one of the most promising options.” With that, the automaker announced 15 new concept vehicles reminiscent of some of the most popular cars on the market and some new ideas.

“We are living in a diversified world and in an era in which it is hard to predict the future. Therefore, it is difficult to make everyone happy with a one-size-fits-all option.”

Though it doesn’t have a very creative name yet, the Pickup EV looks a lot like the Toyota Tacoma or Toyota Tundra. It has a high stance that mimics the stance of the mid-size pickup truck. It also has similar headlights to the Toyota trucks. Since there isn’t too much information on the Pickup EV yet, it isn’t clear which truck it will be most similar to.

It has long been rumored that the popular trucks would get an electric version, but Toyota took its time on the announcement. Now it seems the Pickup electric vehicle is well on its way.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is one of those cult-favorite vehicles that wasn’t around for too long. With the official Toyota Media Briefing on Battery EV Strategies released today, it looks like the FJ Cruiser is coming back to life. As an electric vehicle, that is. The Compact Cruiser EV has a similar shape and is even painted in a matching blue color.

It appears to be a sporty off-road SUV with four doors and a boxy shape. The Compact Cruiser electric vehicle looks a lot like the Toyota FT-4X Concept. This concept was back in 2018, so it has been in the works for a few years now. Toyota said this concept vehicle was “utility at its best.” The Concept Cruiser EV looks like a more refined, driveable version of this vehicle.

What other BEVs and EVs were announced today?

Toyoda announced that the company would have “a large SUV with available third-row seats that allow families to experience fulfilling times together.” Based on the lineup, this appears to be the bZ Large SUV concept vehicle. It looks similar to a Lexus RX, NX, or even a Toyota Highlander. Since the first model in the lineup is the bZ4X, it makes sense there would be a variety of options for this vehicle as it is further ahead in production.

There is an assortment of small and compact vehicles because those are the bread and butter of battery electric vehicles. Once the Toyota bZ4X hits the market, the automaker will likely continue to release similar cars. It promises to roll out 30 battery EV models by 2030, so it better get moving.
