The New Ram Electric Truck Shows What Its Made of at CES 2023
The 2023 International Consumer Electronics Show is underway in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the site of the unveiling of the new Ram electric truck. This new pickup will compete against other half-ton electric pickups in the market, which pushes expectations much higher than where they were for other electric pickups. Does this new Ram 1500 EV have what it takes to take on the other EV pickups?
What does the first Ram electric truck bring to the EV pickup truck class
The first Ram EV truck is expected to be offered as part of the 2024 model year. After months of development, the production version of this Ram arrives in Las Vegas, ready to reveal itself at CES 2023. This new electric Ram should compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Tesla Cybertruck, and Rivian R1T.
Early reports from Car and Driver tell us this Ram 1500 EV claims a diving range of up to 500 miles, 10,000 pounds of towing capability, and fast-charging speeds of up to 150 kWh. This new electric pickup could also offer some autonomous driving capabilities.
Does this Ram EV truck have an official name?
As far as we know, there’s no official name for the new electric Ram. The most sensible name would be to simply call it the Ram 1500 EV, but other names have been tossed around. This new electric pickup could go by Ram Revolution or Ram 1500 REV. The name might not matter as much as what this truck brings to the table.
Did Ram change the rear suspension system of this new EV pickup truck?
Similar to the other electric trucks that share names with gas-powered counterparts, we see a change in the rear suspension system. The new Ram electric truck features an independent rear suspension system with coil springs. This creates more space for more batteries. In this way, this electric Ram offers a premium on driving range, which is an expected quality in the electric pickup truck world.
Although most trucks use solid axles, live rear suspension systems are preferred for improved towing, hauling, and drag racing. While we don’t think most owners will drag race their new Ram 1500 EV, having a live rear suspension could make the truck quicker during a high-speed race.
Will the Ram electric truck offer multiple body styles?
The pickup truck market as a whole has changed. Many pickups now only offer one body style instead of three. Ram has only offered two body styles for the past couple of pickup truck generations. The new electric Ram truck may only come in a Crew Cab build with a 6-foot 4-inch bed. This is another way the new Ram 1500 EV could be similar to the other EV pickup truck offered.
How much will the Ram EV truck cost?
The new electric Ram pickup won’t arrive until the 2024 model year. It’s expected to be competitively priced at around $40,000. With more half-ton trucks in the electric pickup truck market, we might see the prices of these EV trucks fall back to a more reasonable price range.
