The new Ford Mustang is on the way, with a new generation of pony cars. That’s good news for enthusiasts watching the sunset of fan favorites like the Dodge Challenger. However, the new S650-generation Mustang doesn’t just hit the road soon; it’s heading to race tracks near you. Check out some of the new Ford Mustang racing series cars, like the new GT3 and GT4.

Is there a new Ford Mustang coming out?

Fans can smile widely for a bit longer; Ford is making a new Mustang generation, the S650. The pony car’s seventh generation arrives on the heels of many other sad discontinuations, like the Dodge Challenger and Charger.

Moreover, the new S650 race car will include the most powerful 5.0L Coyote V8-powered GT ever and the only naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 in the Ford model’s history with 100 horsepower per liter of displacement, the Dark Horse. However, Ford isn’t just looking to continue the gas-powered tenure of the pony car on the street; the Blue Oval is taking its steed back to the track.

Can a Mustang be a race car?

While a street-legal V8 Ford Mustang is typically tail-happy yet compliant on a track, Ford’s new racing series vehicles are purpose-built race cars. For instance, Ford says it will send the pony car into competition with a Mustang GT3 race car.

That car will compete in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) 2024 race season, which includes the grueling 24 Hours of Daytona. Moreover, Ford Performance says the racing initiative is a collaboration between Ford and Multimatic Motorsports to create a set of 5.0L V8-equipped GT3 racers.

Moreover, the Blue Oval will field new Mustang-derived cars in NASCAR to take on America’s oval racing roots. An NHRA-focused Factory X drag racing vehicle will also lay down rubber in straight-line sprints. The S650 generation car will also evolve into a GT4 and Australian V8 Supercars competitor. Ford is serious about making its new pony car “go like hell.”

How much is a Ford Mustang GT4?

The new Ford Mustang GT4 will add high cost to existing track-ready variations of the Ford Mustang, like the GT500. Given the cost of the 2022 Ford Mustang GT4, the new variation will likely cost $250,000 or more.

Of course, that money doesn’t just buy a fast muscle car; it buys a Mustang-derived competitor for GT4 race-day beasts like the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 and Toyota GR Supra GT4. Moreover, MotorTrend suggests that Ford’s upcoming GT4 will hit tracks in time for the 2023 racing season.

Is a Mustang a supercar or a muscle car?

The Ford Mustang is a pony car, muscle car, and in some definitions, a grand tourer. However, the Ford model is not a supercar.

Still, Ford is entering a new Mustang derivation to compete in the Australian Supercars Championship. Ford calls it the ‘Gen3’ Mustang GT Supercar, and it will pack a Coyote V8 with over 600 horsepower. That car is one of the Blue Oval’s racing initiatives and promises to put the S650’s best foot forward in Australia.
