Is it a fair fight? Who cares? In what world have we ever looked for a fair fight? The electric truck world is growing, and a new but classic name has been added. We know more about the upcoming 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali than we did before. The question we must answer is how does this new electric truck stack up? Let’s explore.

Starting with the Stats: 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, 2022 Rivian R1T

The first version of the Sierra EV to hit the market will be the top trim level. We aren’t sure what the price or power will be for the base model but we could surmise it should be the same as the Chevy Silverado EV WT trim.

This comparison uses the top trim of the Ford F-150 Lightning, which is closest in price and power to the R1T and Sierra EV electric trucks.

Does the Sierra EV stack up in this electric truck comparison?

Unfortunately, the GMC truck is the most expensive, and that cost isn’t offset by being the leader in most categories. The only two places you see the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 leading the way are with battery power and driving range.

If you’re looking for a more powerful truck than the Sierra EV, the Rivian R1T is the truck you want to drive. When you want the most payload, the Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum offers the carrying power you desire. Incidentally, the shorter-range battery and powertrain of the F-150 Lightning bring a 2,000-pound payload capacity.

If the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali doesn’t stack up with power, why would you want to drive it?

Some consumers will instantly answer this question by stating they don’t want to drive this electric truck, and that’s just fine. The Sierra certainly falls short of the other two trucks when you need more towing and payload.

On the other hand, the Sierra EV does bring some signature features and qualities that make it a good option for some drivers. The GMC not only offers a much better driving range but it’s also expected to tow for a greater distance because of the lower tow rating and larger battery pack. Unfortunately, this is only an expectation, not a proven fact.

The GMC electric truck is equipped with Super Cruise. This feature allows this truck to drive for many miles without the need to put your hands on the wheel or feet on the pedals. This hands-free driving feature works while towing a trailer in the Sierra EV. The Ford F-150 Lightning has Blue Cruise, which is similar, but it doesn’t work while the truck is towing a trailer.

If you absolutely must have the GMC electric truck, this is a good option, and it should have many great features to enjoy. When you want a focus on capability and a bit of frugality, both the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T are better options.
