Here’s a fun new game you can play in traffic. It’s called spot the most stolen pickup truck in history. This model has been sitting in plain sight for years as criminals set their targets on them. Here’s a hint, this truck isn’t from Kia or Hyundai.
What is the most stolen pickup truck in history?
Drum roll, please! The most stolen pickup truck in history is the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. That might be a bit older than expected, but age often goes hand in hand with being outdated. These older Chevy trucks lack modern theft deterrents.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) shared that the 2004 Silverado regularly ranks as the most stolen truck. In 2020, this model was reported stolen about 40,968 times. Then in 2021, that number jumped to 48,206.
Also, the 2006 Ford F-150 isn’t far behind. It was reported stolen about 48,175 times in 2022. That’s only about 31 models behind the Silverado.
But in good news, the NICB shares that overall truck thefts are declining. Ford and Chevy trucks accounted for 33% of stolen vehicles in 2021 and only 25% in 2022. Older trucks are targeted because they lack keyless ignition systems, immobilizers, and real-time tracking.
Drivers often leave them unsecured. Leaving your vehicle unlocked creates an opportunity for thieves. Some people even leave their keys inside their trucks while they go inside stores.
Plus, older pickup trucks are valuable because the demand for replacement parts is extremely high. Replacement headlights, powertrain components, electronics, bumpers, and more can fetch a high price.
