Quick, what’s the most stolen car in the US! If you guess a Kia or Hyundai, you’re correct. Thieves nabbed 31,712 Hyundai Elantras in 2024.

Thieves choose to steal trendy cars

After TikTok users discovered and shared new ways to steal certain Kias and Hyundais in 2021, stealing them became a twisted sort of trend. Before then, the half-ton truck (first the F-150, then the Silverado) were the most-stolen vehicles in the country. And in parts of the country where trucks are important for navigating bad roads or weather, they still are the most popular vehicles to steal. The Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle in Alaska, Maine, and New Mexico.

It’s fascinating to look at the most-stolen vehicle in every state. I grew up in Vermont, and Vermonters’ love of AWD Subarus was a running joke for many. But with Vermont thieves nabbing 25 Foresters in 2024, it looks like the brand is also a favorite for criminals there.

What about Michigan? It seems that dedication to Detroit-made vehicles runs so deep, thieves are ignoring Hyundais and Kias–even if they are easy to steal. They are putting in the extra work to steal Jeep Grand Cherokees. To be precise, 1507 in 2024 alone. You might as well support the UAW with what you drive–even if not with your wallet.

Without further ado, here are the most-stolen vehcles in every state:
