Most Reliable SUV Isn’t a Toyota or Honda, Says Consumer Reports

Reliability is a crucial factor when choosing which SUV to buy. If you drive a reliable vehicle, it will likely last longer, perform better, need fewer repairs, and not leave you stranded on the side of the road. In terms of reliability, two of the best automakers are Toyota and Honda. However, according to Consumer Reports, the most reliable new SUV isn’t a Toyota or Honda. It’s the 2023 Lexus GX full-size luxury SUV. While Toyota owns Lexus, it’s a separate car brand — exclusively offering luxury models.

2023 Lexus GX is the most reliable SUV, according to Consumer Reports

The 2023 Lexus GX is the most reliable new SUV, according to analysis from Consumer Reports. Each year, CR reveals its list of most reliable cars — and the GX is the highest on the list. Also, overall, the luxury SUV took the second spot for reliability — behind the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid compact sedan.

Here is the Consumer Reports list of 10 most reliable cars:

  1. 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid
  2. 2023 Lexus GX
  3. 2023 MINI Cooper
  4. 2022 Toyota Prius
  5. 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata
  6. 2023 Lincoln Corsair
  7. 2023 Toyota Corolla
  8. 2023 Subaru Crosstrek
  9. 2023 BMW 3 Series
  10. 2022 Toyota Prius Prime

The only other SUVs on the reliability list are the 2023 Lincoln Corsair compact luxury SUV and the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact crossover SUV. While there are multiple Toyota models on the most reliable list, none of them are SUVs. Also, no Honda models crack the top 10.

In addition to the 2023 Lexus GX named by Consumer Reports as the most reliable SUV, Lexus fares well for car brand reliability. For the list of most reliable car brands, Lexus takes the second spot. Toyota is the best for overall reliability, while Honda is fifth.

These reliability rankings for the Lexus, Toyota, and Honda — as well as the 2023 GX luxury SUV — are based on Consumer Reports’ annual Auto Reliability Survey. For the most recent Auto Reliability Survey, the organization received owner surveys for over 300,000 vehicles during the previous 12 months.

The surveys asked owners to identify various problem areas, such as electric systems, brakes, engines, leaks, paint, and noises. Since the Lexus brand and the GX SUV had minimal issues in these problem areas, Consumer Reports ranked them very high on the most reliable lists.
