Summer is upon us! Are you looking for a sporty little convertible to take you to and from the beach? Look no further. Check some of the most reliable convertible options out there for your next summer vacation.
While the convertibles listed here are available in 2021 models right off the lot, you can also rent most of these from the local Hertz or Budget Car Rental.
Mazda MX-5 Miata is the most reliable convertible
Named one of the least boring sports cars you can buy, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is definitely a fun convertible for your summer vacation. Consumer Reports rated the 2021 Miata an overall score of 87, which means it is a reliable and fun pick.
The Miata is fun to drive and gets pretty good mileage, but the 2021 model will only fit two drivers. Taller passengers need not apply. This one also doesn’t have much room in the trunk.
The base price for the MX-5 Miata is $26,830, but you can probably rent one of these at the local rental car agency.
If you are zooming around your coastal town for a bit, this is a good choice. Just don’t plan on transporting people or coolers on that trip.
The BMW Z4 is a luxury pick for the most reliable convertible
The BMW Z4 is another two-seater perfect for trips along the coastline. A little more expensive than the Miata, the Z4 starts at $49,700 new. Consumer Reports gave this a score of 79, with predicted reliability of three out of five.
Not a bad pick for shorts trips. The fuel economy is good, and it has a bit more room than the Miata, but not much. The Z4 is fun to drive and handles well, but the ride won’t be the most comfortable due to the car’s small nature.
Mustang Convertible for four
The Ford Mustang is one of the only four-seaters on this list. With a score of 76 and predicted reliability of three out of five, this is a solid choice. The predicted owner satisfaction is a five out of five.
The mustang has many trims available, but the base starts at $27,155. It has a 2.3L turbo four-cylinder or a GT V8 manual, both of which sound like a lot of fun to drive.
The rear seat isn’t the biggest but combined with the trunk; you can fit your umbrellas and coolers for the trip. The Mustang is probably the easiest to find most reliable convertible on the list. Most rental companies will offer this Ford model for a reasonable price.
Skip the Fiat 124
The Fiat 124 made the list, but just barely. It only scored a 32 out of 100 on the overall score, with predicted reliability of two out of five. The owner satisfaction came in at a two out of five.
Consumer Reports notes that it handles well and is fun to drive, but the highs end there. It doesn’t have much room in the cabin or the trunk and only offers two small seats.
This Fiat is so similar to the Miata; you may as well go for the Mazda if you are between the two. Unless you are brand loyal, the Fiat 124 is a bit of a miss. The price starts at $25,390 for the base convertible.
