A compact luxury SUV has to wear many hats. It has to be small enough to maneuver and have enough room in the cargo area for everything you might need. These reliable and popular small luxury SUVs come from brands you trust, like Acura, BMW, and Lexus. However, one sport utility vehicle didn’t impress on reliability or popularity.

There are many reliable and popular small luxury SUVs from 2017, but the Acura RDX was the best of the bunch. U.S. News says the RDX has low ownership costs and offers a smooth ride. It has room for five passengers and gets 19 to 20 mpg in the city and 27 to 28 mpg on the highway.

J.D. Power gave the 2017 Acura RDX a predicted reliability rating of 3.5 out of five. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the SUV a five-star overall safety rating. On tests like the frontal crash, side crash, and rollover, the RDX proved to be a safe option.

You can’t have a list of small luxury SUVs without the 2017 BMW X3. The X3 comes in three trim levels with two engine options, both of which are sporty enough for the SUV. Buyers could also opt for all-wheel drive. That left the fuel economy between 19 and 21 mpg in the city and 26 to 28 mpg on the highway.

J.D. Power gave the 2017 BMW X3 a predicted reliability rating of 3.5 out of five. The NHTSA gave the SUV a five-star safety rating, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it many high scores on its crash tests. Those tests include the moderate overlap front, side impact, and rear crash protection.

Don’t overlook the reliable 2017 Lexus NX

Some of the strong points of the 2017 Lexus NX are the high predicted reliability and comfortable cabin. The Lexus SUV has room for five and comes in front or all-wheel drive. Lexus included a rearview camera as a standard safety feature, but things like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning were optional.

With a predicted reliability rating of four out of five, the Lexus is a good choice for reliable and popular small luxury SUVs. The NHTSA gave it an overall five-star rating on its safety tests. Not only that, but the 2017 NX was an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award winner.

You can do better than the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport

The 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport has some positive attributes, like its off-road capability and available third row. It has room for five and four-wheel drive, but the 240 hp isn’t really powerful enough for the SUV. The Land Rover does have a spacious cargo area and can tow up to 4,400 pounds with the proper equipment.

J.D. Power gave the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport a two out of five for reliability. That is the lowest score U.S. News and J.D. Power will give a vehicle. There are no scores from the IIHS or NHTSA for safety. Overall, there are better options out there for a similar price range.

Average Price Paid: $28,605 – $34,673

These reliable and popular small luxury SUVs have plenty of safety, utility, and a stellar reputation. None of these options are bad, but some SUVs have more to offer than others. Depending on your budget, one of these sport utility vehicles should work.
