When thinking of a Dodge Charger, fuel efficiency is probably the last thing that comes to mind. Considering there are seven different Charger trim levels to choose from for the 2022 model year, it’s easy to gravitate to the Scat Pack and Hellcat due to their power. However, the Challenger has one trim that’s more fuel-efficient than the rest.

The most-fuel efficient 2022 Dodge Charger is also the cheapest

If you want to get the most miles per gallon out of a 2022 Dodge Charger, then you’ll have to lower your gaze to the SXT trim level. The Charger SXT is the most entry-level model that you can buy at a starting price of $32,500. That’s cheaper than other midsize sedans like the Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima with similar performance and power.

Under the hood of the Charger SXT is a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 292 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. According to the EPA, the Charger SXT is able to achieve up to 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. That’s not bad, considering it’s a V6 pumping out a decent about of power. The base Charger is also available in all-wheel drive form, which cuts its fuel economy down to 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

How does the Charger SXT perform?

While most buyers are blinded by the Dodge Charger Hellcat’s performance numbers, we think the Charger SXT’s figures are also worth a look. According to Car and Driver’s testing of the 2018 Charger SXT AWD, which has the same engine as the 2022 model, the car went from 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds. The rear-drive model knocked 0.2 seconds off of that time.

For reference, the Nissan Maxima and Toyota Avalon were a little faster to the 60-mph mark. However, the Charger weighs around 600 more pounds than those two.

What else does the 2022 Dodge Charger come with?

In addition to the hefty V6 engine, the base Dodge Charger comes with a decent roster of standard features. The Charger SXT most notably comes with 17-inch wheels, keyless entry/ignition, remote start, a configurable driver information display, cloth seating surfaces, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Regarding the tech features, a 7-inch touchscreen is standard, as well as Apple Carplay and Android Auto. There are also two USB ports, satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system. Truthfully, the Charger SXT isn’t the most luxurious trim level, but it gets the job done with a healthy amount of muscle.

Is it worth it to buy the Charger SXT?

Yes, if you value fuel economy and want some all-American muscle on your daily commute to work. The 2022 Dodge Charger is relatively comfortable and quick enough to appease almost anyone’s need for speed. But even if you don’t need to go fast, it’s nice to know that the base model is relatively fuel efficient, which could sway some buyers away from the Charger Hellcat.
