The Tesla Model Y is in danger. More electric SUV models are being released than ever before. Will 2022 be the death of the Tesla Model Y?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is rapidly becoming one of the most popular SUV models on the market. The Mach-E boasts incredible acceleration along with a refined cabin and stylish exterior.

Many Ford fans weren’t exactly pleased when they learned that the Blue Oval was electrifying the Mustang nameplate. How could an electric SUV possibly still be a Mustang? It turns out that even the oldest Ford fans are beginning to embrace the electric SUV.

The Mustang Mach-E is bad news for the Tesla Model Y because it also combines range with incredible power. The Mach-E’s California Route 1 trim gets an incredible 305 miles of range. The Mach-E GT trim makes a massive 459 horsepower. Best of all, the electric SUV has an affordable starting price of $42,895. After electric vehicle federal tax credits, its price is much closer to $35,395.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an affordable Model Y alternative, but it is just one of the many electric SUV options available to consumers in 2022. Several other automakers are rolling out competitive EVs as well.

Toyota and Subaru are stepping into the electric SUV arena

Toyota and Subaru collaborated on an electric SUV platform to bring something new to the market. The Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra are expected to hit dealerships in 2022. These two electric SUVs will give consumers even more options to choose from.

The Toyota bZ4X’s introduction videos have focused on the battery capabilities of the new vehicle. It will get up to 250 miles of range for its front-wheel drive model. The bZ4X is likely to be much more affordable than both the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E because of its average range and power. The bZ4X could start as low as $40,000, which would bring its cost after tax credits to as low as $32,500.

The Subaru Solterra will be the first mass-produced electric off-road SUV model. The Solterra features Subaru’s X-Mode terrain control system. This system has different settings that will allow the Solterra to trudge through obstacles like deep snow and mud. The SUV has a whopping 8.5 inches of ground clearance. It is the perfect option for consumers looking for an EV that can handle the great outdoors without breaking the bank.

The Tesla Model Y’s price has fluctuated several times. Today, according to Autoweek, the Model Y now costs over $60,000. While the Model Y boasts incredible range and performance, it is simply too expensive for the average American consumer.

Tesla was once responsible for a huge portion of the total new electric vehicle market share. In 2022 automakers like Toyota, Subaru and Nissan will enter the electric SUV space. In the years to come, even more automakers will follow. 2022 could be the year that kills the Tesla Model Y because of all the competition the EV faces.
