Fans of Mitsubishi vehicles will be happy to hear the automaker is launching two new SUVs in North America. It looks like the automaker is aiming to cover both ends of the future auto market. While an unnamed SUV due in 2026 will be fully electric, the model we’ll get first may be an ICE 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander variant engineered for some extreme off-roading.

Mitsubishi launched a redesigned Outlander for the 2025 model year. Next up, we expect a revised Outlander PHEV. This makes sense: the PHEV configuration has proven very popular among U.S. buyers as it can complete a daily commute cheaply with electric power, but also complete a long road trip with its ICE powertrain.

The upcoming 2026 Mitsubishi SUVs

Preliminary reports suggest that the new off-road Outlander will feature new bodywork and graphics. But it will also improve on the Outlander’s AWD system by adding more off-road driving modes. It will build on the current Trail Edition package, but Mitsubishi has yet to announce pricing and technical specs.

Mitsubishi’s strategy is to give American drivers as much vehicle choice as possible. Its current lineup includes the full-size Outlander, Outlander PHEV, smaller Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Mirage G4 sedan and Mirage hatchback. Mitsubishi does not offer any full EVs yet, so its upcoming SUV may be a rebadged version of another automaker’s latest EV. Personally, I want a Mitsubishi Eclipse based on the Renault 5, but now that Renault is part of Stellantis I doubt Dodge/Alfa Romeo would let this happen.

“The addition of this new battery-electric vehicle to our lineup will deliver a blend of internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, so that our customers have the choice of technology that best suits their needs.” —Mark Chaffin, president and CEO, MMNA
