Mitsubishi Will Inspect Your Potentially Defective Airbags, but Only if You Ask Nicely
If you own a 10-year-old Mitsubishi, you’ll want to hear these faulty airbag allegations. Mitsubishi owners have sued the automaker, claiming airbags are failing during crashes. The automaker hasn’t admitted any fault or issued a recall. But drivers can bring their cars in for an airbag inspection and even get a settlement of up to $1,000 each.
Here are the makes and models affected:
- 2013–2017 Mitsubishi Lancer
- 2013–2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
- 2013–2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart
- 2013–2016 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback
- 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander
First and foremost, this isn’t a recall. That means Mitsubishi doesn’t need to contact owners to warn them about potential airbag malfunctions. It won’t be inspecting every potentially faulty vehicle to confirm that the airbags will deploy. To find out whether your Mitsubishi is safe to drive, you’ll need to jump through some hoops.
Why Mitsubishi airbags are allegedly failing
According to the lawsuit, the airbag control unit built by ZF-TRW may malfunction. The result is the airbag failing to deploy during a crash. As part of its lawsuit settlement, Mitsubishi offered free vehicle inspections. It also offered a cash settlement of $8.5 million.
But to get the inspection or the cash, you’ll have to file a claim. You’re eligible if you owned one of the above models by November 2024. The law firm handling the suit is maintaining a VIN lookup tool so you can see if your vehicle is eligible. Then you can use the same website to file a claim: mitsubishi.acusettlement.com.
