In Jackson, Mississippi, a 20-year-old driver pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a machine gun after a high-speed police chase. The details of the chase and the resulting crash and vehicle search aren’t what you hear about every day.

The Capitol Police Department reported that the driver failed to yield to an officer for a traffic stop. Instead, the suspect drove away at a high rate of speed. The motivation behind the evasion became clearer as events unfolded.

The chase ended when the driver crashed into a train, Darkhorse Press reported. According to a personal injury attorney in Copiah County, Mississippi, collisions with a train leave motorists 20 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries than a crash with another vehicle.

While we don’t know if the suspect was harmed, we do know they made it out of the car accident and into the court process.

After the crash, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) got involved. It turns out that the suspect had a Glock retrofitted with a “switch.” “Switches,” or “auto sears,” are illegal machine gun conversion devices. The accessory takes a semi-automatic firearm and turns it into a fully automatic weapon in seconds.

The ATF recently reported a 570% bump in confiscated machine gun conversion devices taken between 2017 and 2021.

After pleading guilty, the Jackson, Mississippi driver now faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
