Nobody expected a quiet country club neighborhood in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, to turn into an emergency scene this week. When a local resident and his Mini Doodle, Oliver, went for their morning walk Tuesday, they noticed a red Jeep parked off-road near the bottom of a hilly, scrub-filled embankment. When they got to the vehicle, it was covered in ice.

The Jeep was about 600 feet from the roadway above, and it didn’t seem like anyone was inside. But Oliver wouldn’t quit barking. “We couldn’t open the doors, it was all fogged up but he was going crazy barking so I figured somebody must be there,” Michael Tutolo recalled. “I thought I saw the brake light but I wasn’t quite sure.”

Tutolo called for help. Upon arrival, responders found an 86-year-old man inside. He had been trapped for 15 hours overnight in freezing temps.

While awake, the man showed signs of hypothermia. “He did tell us he was there since around 5 last night, so he was lucky his car was running for a while, but when we got there, the car was out of gas and shut off,” Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Company #3 Deputy Chief Scott Gloer told KDKA News.

The driver’s daughter suspects her dad had a blood sugar event that sparked the accident. He didn’t have a phone with him, either. The combination left him stranded in his Jeep without proper supplies.

The incident is a great reminder to drivers: Always store emergency items in your car, including water, packaged food, and blankets. Remember to bring your phone with you, too, and keep it charged.
