It started like any other fender-bender response on a Friday afternoon in Novi, Michigan. Shockingly, though, it ended in a police chase, a fire, and a wrecked ambulance.

Around 3:30 p.m. on October 24, a Medstar ambulance arrived at a multi-car crash near 10 Mile and Novi roads. Shortly after, it was stolen by one of the very people involved in the original car accident.

Police said a 33-year-old man jumped behind the wheel of the idling ambulance

The thing is, paramedics were still treating patients from the crash. One paramedic and a patient were inside the back of the ambulance when he took off.

Law enforcement quickly realized happened

According to WXYZ Detroit, officers on the scene began pursuing the stolen ambulance. In the meantime, Medstar used its tracking system to feed location details to police in real time.

The chase stretched several miles before coming to a violent end in Northville Township, at 8 Mile and Beck roads.

Investigators said the man ran a red light before slamming into another vehicle

The crash set the ambulance ablaze, leaving it a total loss.

The suspect then bolted from the burning wreck but didn’t get far. Officers caught and arrested him shortly after he tried to flee on foot.

Despite the chaos, police said the injuries were not life-threatening. Everyone inside the ambulance, as well as a person in the vehicle struck during the chase, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Medstar officials responded that they were thankful for the safety of their crew, the assistance of partner agencies, and the bystanders who helped at the scene. The company is now working with Novi and Northville police as the investigation continues.
