Michigan Driver Facing 15 Years After Horrific Crash Kills a Mother and Two Children

When you get behind the wheel of a car, you are maneuvering thousands of pounds of metal and machinery. Failing to respect that responsibility can shatter lives in a fraction of a second. This has rocked a Michigan community after an out-of-control driver killed a mother and two children in 2025.

Following a months-long investigation, a 21-year-old Pontiac resident is now dealing with the severe legal consequences of his alleged actions. According to local news reports, Tomas Alvarado Jr. was officially arraigned on multiple felony charges this week in connection to a horrific August 2025 wreck that claimed three innocent lives.

The nightmare scenario unfolded on the evening of August 29, 2025. Crash reconstruction units determined that Alvarado was driving his vehicle southbound down Joslyn Road in Oakland County at a high rate of speed. Shortly after 8:20 p.m., the young driver completely lost control of the car, violently veering across the center divider and careening off the pavement.

After plowing through several street signs and utility poles, the out-of-control vehicle launched back onto the asphalt near Montcalm Avenue. Tragically, a local family was simply waiting at a red light in the intersection when Alvarado’s vehicle slammed into them.

The sheer force of the impact was horrific. The driver of the stationary vehicle, 37-year-old Deniquah Reed, suffered fatal injuries. Two of her young boys who were riding in the car – six-year-old Dior and four-year-old Dex – were also killed in the collision.

An Unimaginable Loss For Michigan After Reckless Driving

Miraculously, Reed’s nine-year-old daughter survived the terrifying ordeal. While she was initially hospitalized with critical injuries, medical staff confirmed she has since made a recovery.

Investigators spent months piecing together the exact circumstances of the wreck. While they quickly ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors, the extreme recklessness of the driving behavior was enough for prosecutors to move forward. On Monday, Alvarado surrendered to the court. He was formally slapped with three counts of reckless driving causing death – which carry up to 15 years in prison each – and one count of reckless driving causing serious injury.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard addressed the senseless tragedy.

“Driving a multiple-thousand pound vehicle requires our full and complete attention,” Bouchard stated. “This a tragic reminder of that fact and the penalties that await when driving is not safely executed. Our prayers are with the family and friends of those lost.”

Alvarado was subsequently released on bond following his arraignment as he awaits his next court date.
