Mercedes makes some of the best luxury cars on the market, but the German luxury automaker has plenty of competition. That fierce competition seems to have only pushed Mercedes toward making even better cars, and in fact, the company recently pulled off something that’s nearly impossible in terms of luxury car rankings. Here’s a look at how Mercedes took the top spot in almost every single luxury car category.

Mercedes narrowly won in every luxury car category

Edmunds recently published its rankings for the best luxury cars for the 2023 and 2024 model years, and there were five different categories. There were the x-small luxury sedans, the small luxury sedans, the midsize luxury sedans, the large luxury sedans, and the exotic sedans.

Overall, Mercedes won in four of those categories, and the only category that it didn’t win in was the exotic sedan category.

It was a close race too, especially in the most competitive segments. There were only three entries in the x-small luxury sedan and the exotic sedan segment, but there were many more competitors in the small, midsize, and large luxury sedan segments.

Plus, Mercedes models only won by a few decimal points, which shows how competitive it was.

A look at the Mercedes sedans that won

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class won the top honors in the x-small luxury sedan segment, and the $34,000 car got an overall score of 8.4 out of 10. Overall, the car critic praised its combination of characteristics.

Its 188-hp engine provides more than enough power, and its interior is well-built, high-quality, and high-tech. Edmunds summarized its review by saying that, “the A-Class isn’t a less expensive Mercedes-Benz, it’s simply a smaller one.”

The C-Class, meanwhile, won in the small luxury sedan segment. The $45,000 luxury sedan received a score of 7.9 out of 10, and that’s tied with the runner-up’s score. Just like with most other Mercedes cars, the C-Class drives well while having a luxurious and high-tech interior. The E-Class is similar, but there’s a key difference between the two German luxury cars.

The E-Class starts at $57,000, and it’s a midsize sedan that also drives well and has a great interior. The main difference though is that the automaker gave the E-Class more engine options. Its most powerful option is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder that gets 429 hp. Overall, the car critic gave this luxury car a score of 8.4 out of 10.

The S-Class is the last Mercedes sedan to win its category, and it’s also the most expensive. It starts at $115,000, and unsurprisingly, that pays for a lot of luxury, tech features, and performance capabilities. It features state-of-the-art tech, and its engines are also powerful and fuel efficient.

Its most powerful option is a V8 that gets 496 hp. Despite that impressive output, the car still gets 19 mpg combined. Unsurprisingly, the S-Class has a score of 8.5 out of 10, which is the highest score among all luxury sedans.

Why this is such an impressive feat for Mercedes

The fact that Mercedes won the top spot in almost every category is impressive because it shows how consistently good the German automaker’s cars are. It’s also remarkable because of how highly competitive luxury cars are. Luxury automakers are often trying to one-up each other by adding more powerful engines or higher-tech features.

Mercedes, however, was able to stay ahead of its rivals not just in one segment, but in almost all of them. That shows a commitment to excellence, no matter the model. That’s great for consumers, since car shoppers can be confident that Mercedes is dedicated to making quality cars.
