Imagine you’re in the middle of your shift as a mechanic, moving fast and getting things done, when a coworker grabs your arm, clenching your bicep in a death grip. “Dude. There’s a body bag in the back of that hearse.” You blink. Maybe you misheard. But nope. Sure enough, a hearse just rolled in, and through the rear glass, there it is—a black body bag. And not just lying there all crumpled up. No, this thing has shape. A distinctly human shape.

This isn’t a bizarre SNL sketch, this was a true story–according to a mechanic who frequents Reddit. What in the world was going on here? The way I see it, there were three possibilities.

1. There was an actual body in the hearse

Maybe the funeral home director’s hearse needed an oil change and figured, Hey, the deceased won’t mind a quick pit stop. Maybe they’re so used to carting around cadavers that they forgot mechanics aren’t. Or maybe someone completely forgot Uncle Jim was back there. Either way, that’s weird.

2. It was just an empty bag in the hearse… with a very unfortunate shape

This seems the most likely. The mechanic even admitted, “I’m assuming that the bag had taken the shape of a body after being used continuously because it dead a** looked like it had a corpse inside.” Which, yeah—makes sense. Body bags are designed to hold bodies, and they probably don’t bounce back to a nice, fluffy rectangle after use. And let’s be honest, the hearse driver probably didn’t think twice about leaving it there. I mean, it’s a hearse. It’d be weirder if it didn’t have a body bag in it.

3. The mother of all pranks

This is my favorite scenario. Picture it: A funeral director tells the intern, Take the hearse in for an oil change. The kid, a certified menace, sees an opportunity. He tosses a body bag in the back—maybe even stuffs it with newspapers. Then he parks himself behind the glass panes in the garage door, waiting for the mechanics to notice. A true work of art.

At the end of the day, we’ll never know. Rough-and-tough mechanics took one look at that bag and noped right out. As the original poster admitted, “No one had the balls to poke it and see if it was empty though lol.”
