The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is popular because of its comfortable cabin. The small SUV is much more refined than other small SUVs in the same price range. The CX-5 achieves 24 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. It gets a combined 27 miles per gallon.

The popular Toyota RAV4 gets 27 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway. That’s 31 mpg combined. The CR-V achieves 28 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway, giving it 31 mpg combined as well.

The CX-5 has an average driving range of about 413 miles based on its 15.3-gallon tank and combined miles per gallon. It costs nearly $65 to refill the CX-5 based on today’s national average gas price of $4.236 provided by AAA.com. The RAV4 costs around $61 to refuel based on the national average gas price and its 14.5-gallon gas tank. It can travel for nearly 450 miles on a full tank.

The Mazda CX-5 gets decent gas mileage, but it’s far from class-leading. Many small SUVs can get over 35 additional miles of driving range while costing drivers less money to refuel. Hybrid SUVs are capable of giving drivers over 100 more miles of range than the CX-5. The 2022 Mazda CX-5’s gas mileage is average compared to other small SUVs.

The Mazda CX-5’s fuel economy is nothing to write home about, but it has plenty of other strengths. The main appeal of the CX-5 is the standard comfort and tech that the small SUV offers for a reasonable price. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 starts at $25,900. That’s cheaper than both the RAV4 and CR-V, yet the CX-5 features a more luxurious interior than both models.

It’s available in a whopping eight different trim levels offering different degrees of power and luxury. Car and Driver recommends the Turbo trim (starting at $36,400). It is one of the few 2022 SUVs to receive a perfect 10/10 overall score from the automotive publication as well as an Editor’s Choice award.

How long will the Mazda CX-5 last?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has average longevity. Consumers should expect the small SUV to run for at least 200,000 miles when well-maintained. That’s roughly 14 years of ownership based on the national average annual driving range of 13,500 miles a year.

The average consumer keeps a vehicle for about 8.4 years, according to iSeeCars.com, so the CX-5 holds up well over time. Its resale value is decent. Based on Kelley Blue Book’s fair market value estimate, the small SUV initially depreciates about five percent per year during the first five years of ownership. All in all, the CX-5 is a great buy, but look elsewhere if you want an SUV that can help avoid the sting of high gas prices.
