Max Verstappen Shares Health Update Following Hard Australian GP Crash

Red Bull Racing Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has provided a health update in a video shared by his team, stating that there was “nothing broken” from the major crash during the Australian Grand Prix qualifying session.

MotorBiscuit reported details of Verstappen’s crash that took place on his flying lap in Q1. As Verstappen decelerated towards Turn 1, the rear wheels on his RB22 F1 car locked up, sending it into a spin. The car then hurtled over the gravel and crashed into the barriers.

Replays of the incident suggest a potential mechanical fault that caused the lockup. The Dutchman reacted strongly on team radio after hitting the barriers head-on, saying, “The car just f***ing locked on the rear axle. Fantastic.” Verstappen likely held onto the steering wheel during the crash since he was seen shaking his right hand while walking away from the crash site.

He was then taken to the medical center for a thorough checkup, where his wrist was X-rayed. Following the mandatory medical checks, his team shared a video on X where Verstappen confirmed he was alright. He said:

“I’m all good. Did all the scans, nothing broken. So that’s all good.

“What happened? I don’t know. I just hit the brakes and the whole rear axle just locked on me. There was no saving that at that speed.

“Unfortunately, there was a lot of damage on the car. We will try to analyze everything and then try and have a good race.”

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Verstappen said he hadn’t experienced such a “weird” incident in his life before. He said:

“I didn’t speak to the team yet or didn’t look into any data, but to lose the car like that on the braking I’ve never experienced that in my life.

“I hit the [brake] pedal and suddenly the whole rear axle just completely locked up, so definitely a bit weird.

“I think it already went wrong before the downshift because I hit the pedal and as soon as I hit the pedal, because you quite quickly downshift, it already immediately locked on the peak of the brake pressure, basically.

“So something very weird, that’s for sure.”
