It’s easy to focus on the upfront cost of a new car, but insurance costs are another consideration that shouldn’t be overlooked. For 2021, Maserati vehicles have some of the highest average annual insurance premiums, according to MotorTrend’s list of Most Expensive Cars to Insure for 2021. Here are the vehicles that made the list, and what you can expect from each of them.

Which Maserati vehicles made the list?

Maserati stands out as being the only automaker other than BMW to appear on MotorTrend’s list three separate times. The models that made this list are the Levante GTS, which costs $3,803 annually to insure; the Ghibli S Q4 GranSport, at $4,208; and the Quattroporte S GranSport, at $4,823. The Ghibli and Quattroporte rank second and first on this list, respectively.

Aside from the Maseratis, the most expensive vehicle on this list is the Tesla Model S Performance Plaid, which costs $4,208 to insure. The vehicle on this list with the most affordable insurance is the BMW M5 Competition, which costs $3,777 per year to insure. Other automakers to make the list include Nissan and Audi.

The 2021 Maserati Levante GTS features a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 550 hp. This vehicle starts at $125,890. It gets 13 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway.

MotorTrend calls this vehicle “the closest thing there is to a Ferrari SUV.” In part, this is due to the fact that Ferrari builds the V8 found within the Levante GTS.

According to reviewers, although this vehicle offers a fun driving experience, it doesn’t function particularly well as an SUV due to its somewhat limited cargo space. Additionally, MotorTrend found that the interior is not particularly impressive, and is fairly inconsistent in terms of quality. This, plus the $3,803 annual insurance costs, make it challenging for the Levante GTS to hold its own against competitors such as the Porsche Cayenne.

What to expect from the Ghibli S Q4 GranSport

The 2021 Maserati Ghibli S Q4 GranSport starts at $82,240. It features a 3.0-liter V6 engine that makes 424 hp. The Ghibli S Q4 gets 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

As with the Levante, MotorTrend reviewers found it difficult to recommend this vehicle due to its immense insurance costs. They found that although the vehicle provides a lot of power and a fun driving experience, it just doesn’t compare to similar vehicles when it comes to quality and technology. In fact, MotorTrend states that some of the Ghibli’s gear “looks straight out of the corporate parts bin.”

The Quattroporte S GranSport: 2021’s most expensive car to insure

Topping the list is the 2021 Maserati Quattroporte S GranSport, which starts at $104,890. It features a 3.0-liter V6 engine that makes 424 hp. The Quattroporte S GranSport gets 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

MotorTrend calls this vehicle “a sports car that’s also a decent large luxury sedan.” Reviewers found that the Quattroporte handles well on twisting roads or racetracks thanks to its highly responsive steering and well-balanced design.

Even so, this doesn’t necessarily justify the $4,823 annual insurance premium. MotorTrend states that the interior materials have some low-quality details, making this vehicle come across as somewhat less luxurious than other options in the segment.

There’s no doubt that Maserati makes iconic luxury vehicles. However, looking into the average annual insurance premiums before purchasing your vehicle can help save you money down the road and prevent you from getting hit with unexpected expenses.
