One minute, he was lounging in his owner’s car. The next, the dog had been stolen and found himself barreling down the highway in a high-speed police chase.

A Louisiana dog found himself in the middle of a crime spree Saturday when a teenage thief stole a vehicle from a Planet Fitness parking lot in Hammond. The suspect likely thought he’d just snagged a clean getaway car. Then he realized he had a passenger.

The dog’s owner quickly reported the theft. Baton Rouge Police soon spotted the stolen car and gave chase. The suspect refused to stop. Instead, he led officers onto I-12, pushing deeper into Livingston Parish. Then, shots rang out.

Deputies joined the pursuit as the stolen car sped down the interstate. At some point, the suspect fired at police. He shot so many times, officers initially believed there were two gunmen.

Despite the gunfire, officers managed to box the suspect in near the Holden on-ramp. He had nowhere to run. Police moved in and took him into custody.

But something was missing.

The stolen dog had vanished

The dog was nowhere to be found. His collar was in the car, but there was no sign of him. Had he been dumped on the side of the road? Was he still running for his life somewhere? Officers fanned out, searching.

Meanwhile, they recovered another piece of evidence—the gun. It was tossed near the Red Oak overpass, likely discarded during the chase. But where was the dog?

Then, days later, the mystery took a happy turn. The missing pup was found and returned to his family. But how he got back remains unknown. Did someone recognize him and call it in? Did an accomplice decide to do the right thing? Or was it just sheer luck? One thing’s for sure: this good boy has earned all the treats after what he’s been through.
