The redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia is the top dog in the Toyota lineup. Is this new version of the Sequoia ready to be the largest full-size SUV from Toyota? It certainly seems like it. The Sequoia uses the same platform as the Tundra and is a new model after many years without change. Does this SUV offer features that make it useful for your family? Let’s dig in and see what’s offered.

Does the 2023 Toyota Sequoia compete with other full-size SUVs?

Have you ever thought of this Toyota SUV in the same class as the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition? If not, you should. The Sequoia is roughly the same size and delivers the goods as a top choice. When you compare the Sequoia to these other SUVs, you’ll find:

  • An efficient powertrain
  • Improved interior with more sophistication
  • Bold new styling
  • Five trims, including the luxurious Capstone model
  • TRD Pro trim for off-roaders

How does the new powertrain improve the 2023 Sequoia?

This new powertrain replaces the old V8, which is a step in the right direction. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia uses a sophisticated 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid powertrain mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This system gives you 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque to deliver brisk acceleration and plenty of power on the highway. The fuel mileage reaches 21 city/24 hwy in 2WD models and 19 city/22 hwy in 4WD versions.

The price of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia might not be family-friendly

The larger size and improvements made in this new generation of the Sequoia calls for a significant increase in the price of this SUV. This full-size SUV starts at $58,300 for the base SR5 model and increases to $67,700 when you choose the 4WD Limited model. A Capstone trim requires you to part with $78,300.

The price of the Sequoia might not be as family-friendly as other models. The Expedition and Tahoe both start at around $50,000.

Where are the comfortable seats in this full-size Toyota SUV?

Similar to most three-row SUVs, the new Toyota Sequoia is comfortable in the first and second rows but tight in the third row of seats. If you’ve got a growing family, as the youngsters become adult-sized, you’ll want to ensure you’ve got room in the middle row to keep them comfortable on long drives.

The base SR5 trim provides space for eight people with a bench across the middle row. Once you move up to a higher trim, this bench is replaced by a pair of captain’s chairs, reducing the seating configuration to seven.

How much cargo room does the 2023 Toyota Sequoia offer?

With occupants in all three rows of seats, you’ll see 22.3 cubic feet of cargo room in the rear. If you’re using this SUV for family road trips, a trailer tow package and a roof rack offer the cargo versatility desired when carrying more than four or five passengers.

When you need to bring materials home for a weekend project or find a special antique at the store, the rear seats fold to expand the cargo area to 86.9 cubic feet. This expansion makes the Sequoia a versatile choice. Is this enough cargo room for your family’s needs?

Stepping up one level brings you a larger touchscreen in this full-size SUV

The SR5 model of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia has an 8-inch touchscreen, but when you move up one step, you’ll find a 14-inch screen. This larger screen comes with the Toyota Audio Multimedia System, giving you the most advanced connectivity and response in any Toyota vehicle.

Is this full-size SUV a family-friendly choice?

If you’re shopping in the full-size SUV class, you’ll pay more than $50,000 for a new SUV, regardless of the model. The new Sequoia offers a powerful engine, versatile cargo options, and flexible seating arrangements. For most families, this full-size Toyota could be large enough to handle every drive. If you want something larger, the Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition Max might be better options.
