Reliability is everything. From daily drivers to work vehicles, no aspect of a car can outweigh knowing that it will turn over when you turn the key. Given the work aspects, having a reliable pickup truck is key to the segment. So, what does that make the least reliable pickup trucks? These are the least reliable 2022 pickup trucks, according to Consumer Reports.
Consumer Reports rates cars and trucks on a great many criteria. One of the most important is the predicted reliability rating. This rating is formed based on the reliability history of a model. In addition, owner reports from CR’s survey are taken into consideration. Consumer Reports gives vehicles a predicted reliability rating for how a vehicle is expected to perform based on the information gathered.
What are the least reliable 2022 pickup trucks?
To qualify as the least reliable 2022 pickup trucks, I chose any model that scored a two out of five or lower. There are only four models that fit that criterion, and they are among the most popular pickup truck models of all time.
Keep in mind that although Consumer Reports has its findings, it is always good to cross-reference a model you want with other outlets like J.D. Power or Kelly Blue Book. Those publications will often find other things. Between two and three cross-references, you should have a good idea of what to expect.
GM has the least reliable 2022 pickup trucks according to Consumer Reports
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 was also on the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks list. It’s not that the GMC Sierra is a bad pickup truck. In fact, Consumer Reports has plenty of nice things to say about it. They gave it a 78/100 for the driving experience. However, due to its mixed bag of reliability issues, CR gave it a predicted reliability rating of only one out of five.
The other GM pickup that landed a one out of five for predicted reliability is the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500. Like the GMC Sierra 1500, the Chevy model landed the same 78/100 for driving experience, and CR liked many things about it. But, with that low of a reliability rating, the truck struggled and ultimately didn’t make it on CR’s recommended list.
What makes the 2022 Chevy Silverado and 2022 GMC Sierra so unreliable?
It is worth saying thousands of people every year buy these massively popular pickup truck models, and for good reason. They are strong towers and carry decades of pickup truck pedigree. However, last year the Silverado had three recalls to its name, and the GMC Sierra is built from the same bones as the Chevy Silverado, meaning they share many of the same issues, but not all are exactly the same.
Although Consumer Reports hasn’t gone into detail about the problems they expect from these two models because of how new they are, we can look back at the 2021 models to see what CR is getting at.
For the 2021 models, which are ultimately similar to the 2022 models, Consumer Reports reviewed a survey with over 300,000 vehicles for each model. It also reviewed consumer data from previous years to form a broad view of the predicted reliability of any given vehicle. There are reports of recurring issues with in-car electronics and brakes (to the point of recall). According to GM Authority, additional issues with the power equipment and transmission have also been reported.
The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic and the 2022 Ford F-150 also struggle with reliability
Along with the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 and the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic landed a one out of five. It has struggled with issues in the fuel systems, brakes, and power equipment. But unlike the others, CR didn’t have many positive things to say about it outside of having one of the nicest cabins in the pickup truck game.
Unfortunately, the least reliable 2022 pickup trucks list isn’t complete without one of the most popular pickup trucks of all time, the Ford F-150.
The 2022 Ford F-150 only got a two out of five for predicted reliability. While it’s not the worst, it’s not great either. There aren’t as many issues with the Ford F-150, but it has already seen one recall so far. That is not the most confidence-inspiring thing ever.
Again if we look back to the all-new 2021 model, we saw many great innovations from the old standby, but we also saw many of them show rust underneath with weeks of purchase.
According to Consumer Reports
While we respect Consumer Reports, it is only one publication. Remember to do your due diligence. Yes, these are the least reliable 2022 pickup trucks, according to Consumer Reports, but other publications will inevitably show something slightly different.
Many people buy these models and have loved them for decades. Always make sure to drive any car you’re thinking about buying yourself, if possible.
