American roads are dangerous enough without the added scourge of emotionally unbalanced motorists. Unfortunately, the NHTSA reports that 66% of on-the-road fatalities involve aggressive driving in one way or another. Of course, every city is different, and the safest driving cities in the country are much less prone to violent, even dangerous road rage incidents than Houston, Texas, or Los Angeles, California.

Two of the safest cities in the country in terms of road rage are in Nebraska, although California also makes the list

Of course, you want to live somewhere with plenty of opportunities. You want to live in the city with a vibrant music scene. However, you likely don’t want your city’s claim to fame to be the highest rates of violent, potentially deadly road rage. Still, if you live in one of the safest driving cities in the country in terms of road rage, hateful drivers might not be as much of a safety concern.

  1. Lincoln, Nebraska

According to data from the NHTSA, Numbeo, the US Census, and the Gun Violence Archive, Lincoln, Nebraska is the safest city in the country in terms of road rage. The state capital has a combined road rage score of 1.50. While that figure might not sound like much by itself, it’s nearly 43 times less than Houston, Texas, the worst city in the country for angry, violent driving.

  1. Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Sioux Falls, South Dakota takes the No. 2 spot on the list of the safest driving cities in the country. The city of 206,410 people earned a score of 5.00, taking into account factors like commuting, road shootings, dissatisfaction, and reckless driving.

  1. Omaha, Nebraska

That’s right. Nebraska makes the list of the safest driving cities twice. Omaha takes the No. 3 spot with a score of 6.75. While Omaha’s score is noticeably higher than Lincoln’s, Omaha’s driver satisfaction and driving efficiency scores are much higher than more populous cities like Los Angeles, California, or Chicago, Illinois.

  1. Bakersfield, California

Granted, Los Angeles, California, is the second worst city in the country for road rage. But Bakersfield, California, owns the No. 4 spot amongst the safest. Bakersfield earns a 9.25 overall score, with low street shooting events and higher driver satisfaction than other US cities.

  1. Boise City, Idaho

Rounding out the top five safest driving cities to avoid aggressive motorists, Boise City, Idaho earns a top spot. The Idaho city fell short of Bakersfield by just 0.25. Of Boise City’s most satisfying and calming characteristics, many drivers report short, easy commutes.
