In an effort to address drunk driving, the Los Angeles Police Department has set up eight DUI checkpoints and increased patrols across LA over the next week, starting on St. Patrick’s Day (17 March). Drivers facing a first-time DUI charge could incur a fine of up to $13,500, along with a risk of license suspension.
The LAPD has selected DUI checkpoints based on the frequency of impaired driving incidents across the city, including DUI-related accidents and arrests. The LAPD stated that impaired driving does not necessarily come from alcohol, but it could also be from certain prescription medications or even marijuana.
A statement by the LAPD read:
“The Los Angeles Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.”
