Land Rover Is the Worst Car Brand You Can Buy for Dependability

Everyone knows that a Toyota or a Honda is going to be reliable, and they aren’t the only reliable automakers either. But, for every reliable automaker, there’s an unreliable automaker. Here’s a look at Land Rover, and why it’s the worst automaker in terms of its dependability.

What the study showed about Land Rover

J.D. Power and Associates ran this study, and its findings are bleak for Land Rover lovers. This study took a look at owners of cars that were three-years old, which means that all the cars were from the 2017 model year. J.D. Power and Associates then, through the course of the year, took a look at how many problems each owner had with their three-year old car.

Then, J.D. Power and Associates added up all the problems that each car’s had over the year. The results showed that Genesis, a brand-new luxury car brand from Hyundai, had just 89 problems per 100 cars over the year. This was the lowest number of issues per 100 cars for the year. However, Land Rover got the highest number of issues per 100 cars for the year.

In Land Rover’s case, J.D. Power and Associates said that Land Rover had 220 problems per 100 cars over the year. This meant that, on average, every single owner reported about two issues in the year. It’s possible that some Land Rovers were more problematic than others, but overall, Land Rovers just had more issues than every other automaker.

Reality agrees with J.D. Power and Associates

It’s one thing to run a study and find some statistics, it’s another thing to see it in the real world. And, unfortunately for Land Rover, its cars often end up on lists of cars with poor reliability. Not all of Land Rover’s cars are unreliable, but it’s just a fact that many of its models aren’t that reliable according to their owners.

For example, some Range Rover owners on Reddit hate the car, in part due to its reliability issues. Reliability is one of the reasons why Land Rover’s aren’t very desirable, the other being the fact that it’s a luxury car brand that people are paying a lot of money for.

Like those owners on Reddit said, a luxury car should be worth its price tag. It certainly doesn’t make sense for those owners to buy a luxury car that is so unreliable that there is, on average, two issues with it every year. But still, despite the fact that many people don’t think luxury SUVs like a Range Rover are worth it, people are still buying Land Rovers.

Why do people love a problematic car?

The simple fact is that, despite its well-known reliability problems, Land Rover still makes some pretty great cars in other aspects. For example, the Defender is being updated to be very high-tech for its class. Updates like that to the Defender makes it worth the money even if its reliability issues frustrate its owners a lot.

On top of that, many rich and famous people who can afford to fix any reliability issues love Land Rovers. Celebrities from very different backgrounds, such as Kylie Jenner and Conor McGregor, are both Range Rover owners. The Range Rover may not be as reliable as a Genesis or a Lexus will be, but it’s more prestigious than a Genesis or a Lexus is.

That’s one of the other reasons this company continues to be successful despite its reliability issues. It still has the image of being a high-class automaker which makes cars for the rich and famous. People looking to be a part of that class may want a Land Rover despite its flaws.
