Since the introduction of the Ford small truck, the 2022 Maverick has grown into a seriously popular truck. It has exceeded Ford’s expectations in sales so much that the brand was forced to put a pause on orders. Even with all of this, the Maverick has continued to prove that Americans are willing to buy a compact pickup. Although some may prefer to buy the top trim of a vehicle, sometimes base models offer something more. And that is certainly the case with the 2022 Ford Maverick XL.

Should you buy a base Ford Maverick?

Even though it may not offer everything that the Maverick Lariat does, the XL model is worth buying. Not only does it sell for a price of around $20,000, it still offers the utility of a pickup. With the Maverick buyers get a standard hybrid powertrain and a unibody truck. Both of these mean comfort and more efficiency when it comes to time at the pump.

Despite the XL Maverick truck not being the most well-equipped option, it is still something worth buying. And that is true for one key reason, standard steel wheels.

Does the Ford Maverick have steel wheels?

In its base form, the Maverick does feature steel wheels. Not only can these be had with the hybrid powertrain, but the available turbocharged engine as well. Steel wheels signify a vehicle that is ready to get some work done. And they have been missing from modern trucks and SUVs for some time.

As wheel technology advances, it may make sense to go with aluminum-alloy wheels and other options. But, there is something charming about good old-fashioned rims on a pickup.

Why are steel wheels good?

Steel wheels are significantly stronger than other options. This makes them ideal for things like off-roading or dealing with harsh conditions. To some, these wheels may not be as attractive as other options. But, they do certainly give a rugged appearance to a unibody pickup truck.

Steel wheels also help to lower the cost of the base Maverick. Aluminum wheels are typically more expensive than their steel counterparts, according to MotorTrend, which is why more complex wheels may be reserved for higher trim Maverick models.

The Ford Maverick XL is a good truck

The Ford Maverick XL may be the cheapest version of Ford’s small truck, but it is still a decent option. It is both affordable and usable, which is likely why it is selling so well. According to Ford Authority, it has even outsold the Ford Ranger as a pickup truck.
