Kansas driver runs away from traffic stop, hides in random garage full of illegal explosives

Here’s an interesting one! It’s not out of everyday possibility for someone to run from the police. This week, however, after chasing a suspect fleeing a traffic stop, police in Kansas inadvertently came across a garage full of dozens of “suspicious” items. The Wichita Bomb Squad and ATF assumed these were illegal explosive materials.
The driver ran away from a Newton police officer and hid in a random local residential garage. The home is just north of downtown Wichita, Kansas. Once police entered the structure, they noticed a collection of items not normally stored in a private home.
Police say they cordoned off the garage but authorities quickly determined the materials, in their found state, would not pose a threat to the area.
Still, the Wichita Bomb Squad and ATF were called in to inspect some 60-odd items. The groups identified the collection as homemade bomb-ables, which they took to a “safe area.” Authorities destroyed the items yesterday evening.
Police arrested a resident living at the home and continued searching for another suspect of interest.
The driver from the original traffic stop was also arrested but for warrants unrelated to the explosive materials. Police think the driver just picked a random home to hide and has nothing to do with the illegal activity there.
If someone runs away from a police officer during a traffic stop, there are ramifications. In my state of Ohio, anyway, eluding drivers face fines, jail time, and points or a suspended license.
In any case, this is certainly an interesting turn of events after a “routine” traffic stop turned very much out of the ordinary. It makes me wonder what else folks are storing in their garage…
