Kansas City Man Arrested for Selling Cars on Facebook Marketplace, Then Stealing Them Back
A Kansas City man has been arrested for selling cars on Facebook Marketplace. That’s not the illegal part. Well, not all of it. The illegal part is that he stole the cars back after he sold them, allegedly.
It was all part of an elaborate scam, according to the Kansas City Police Department. Now the man faces 14 felony charges after allegedly defrauding at least 8 victims out of more than $24,000, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson.
According to court records, Kansas City police received eight stolen vehicle reports between May and June last year, all following a similar pattern. In each case, the victim purchased a vehicle from the same seller on Facebook Marketplace, who listed himself under an alias. Investigators later identified him as the suspect.
After completing each sale in person, the defendant provided to the victims what appeared to be a legitimate title and bill of sale. Shortly after the transactions, however, each buyer reported that someone had stolen their newly purchased vehicle.
“My message is to be careful,” KCTV News reports Johnson said about making online transactions. “I’m not telling you do not engage in the practice. You just need to be smart. You need to be careful, and you need to be diligent.”
The suspect has a long list of charges against him in multiple counties
Police charged the suspect with six counts of first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and eight counts of forgery. Each count carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. If convicted on all counts, he could serve up to 98 years in prison.
Fox 4 News reports that court records show the man is also a suspect in numerous other cases. In those cases, prosecutors charged him with fraud, theft, and tampering in multiple counties on both sides of the Missouri-Kansas state line.
He is facing at least seven additional counts in Johnson County, Kansas, and Platte County, Missouri, and in Johnson County, Missouri. He also has eight charges pending in three other cases in Jackson County.
Earlier this month, a Pennsylvania man was arrested for allegedly participating in a Facebook Marketplace scam. In that case, the suspect was allegedly selling vehicles illegally on behalf of a dealership and local residents, even though he never obtained a license to do so.
