When you think of tractors or lawnmowers, one brand, John Deere, stands out in our minds the most. But, there are many brands selling riders as well as push mowers on the market for your lawn maintenance. You can also find Toro, Cub Cadet, and some, like Honda have been known to cut grass at a top speed.
Consumer Reports released their list of Best Lawn Tractors and Best Zero-Turn Tractors. While John Deere has several models on there, there’s one other brand that sticks out.
How John Deere got into the lawn and garden market
John Deere is one of the most familiar names when it comes to farm equipment, having built tractors since 1918. However, in the ’50s, engineers from the company pushed for a riding mower design when it became apparent that there was a need for them. Not everyone was on board with the idea, so it took several years to get the concept from paper to production.
According to the John Deere Journal, the 110 was the first model produced by John Deere, and the company began selling it in 1965. It won the Award of Excellence for Achievement in Industrial Design along with 10 other products. This model remained in production for 11 years, making a few other models along the way.
Today you can find a large line of lawn tractors from the John Deere brand, some offering a 42-inch deck as well as a 48-inch deck to handle large-sized lawns. Prices for this brand are generally the most expensive as it is known for making quality products.
Consumer Reports list the top five riding mowers on their site, and they’re all John Deere models. Prices for these range from approximately $2,000 to $3,200.
Does John Deere have the most expensive model on the list?
John Deere extends its products beyond tractors and lawnmowers; you can now also find UTVs as well. Still, when it comes to lawn tractors, the company certainly holds a monopoly with reliable models and expensive equipment, you might be surprised to find out that there’s one other brand that has a more expensive mower than John Deere. It’s not as well known, but it’s fast becoming a worthy competitor.
Toro is a manufacturing company that makes all sorts of outdoor lawn care equipment. The one product that the brand is known for is its zero-turn-radius riders. Toro’s Timecutter made the Consumer Reports list of the best zero-turn mowers available.
This model, the MYRIDE Timecutter 75755, comes with an impressive 50-inch deck that’s offered for the price of $3,700. John Deere’s best zero-turn model comes in at No. 2 with an overall score of 85, and it comes with a price of $3,500.
How well does the Toro MYRIDE Timecutter perform?
Consumer Reports tested the Timecutter and gave it an overall score of 87 out of a possible 100. This is due to its excellent ratings for handling, side-discharging, and mulching. To top off the score, the MYRIDE suspension system, installed on the platform, makes riding on it much more comfortable.
Much like John Deere, Toro’s Timecutter received a four out of five for predicted reliability for the model. As far as owner’s satisfaction, they scored a perfect rating of five out of five.
The MYRIDE Timecutter comes with the washout port, which allows you to clean off the underside of the deck when you’re done mowing your lawn. It also will cut the grass when driving in reverse mode. However, you don’t get cruise control or power steering.
Powering it up is a 24.5-hp motor with a hydrostatic drive running on two cylinders and variable forward speeds. The John Deere Z375R-54 zero-turn model has a 25 hp Briggs & Stratton Motor and has a 54-inch deck. Other zero-turns from John Deere offer 24 hp, and some have 60-inch decks.
John Deere makes some of the best lawn tractors available, but if zero-turn maneuverability is what you need, you might think about leaning toward the Toro Timecutter instead.
