Three-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Joey Logano has opened up about the future of driving amid the rise of autonomous cars and robotaxis, suggesting that the car enthusiast is here to stay, regardless of the push for driverless technology.
Logano believes that, despite technology taking over many aspects of our lives, such as driving, since many view it as a way to get from point A to point B, there will still be people who are attracted to the spirit of driving, those who will always be eager to get behind the wheel of a car.
Piloting the No. 22 Ford Mustang Dark Horse in the premier stock car racing series, Logano spoke about his plan to co-own a local Ford dealership. Off the racetrack, he often drives his Ford Model T, which is more than 100 years old.
On matters regarding the future of cars, given how the automotive industry has been embracing technology like never before, Logano said that it is a never-ending pursuit of improvement. Speaking on the Yahoo Finance YouTube channel, he explained:

“Our cars are very advanced now, but how much further can it go? When you fast forward a 100 years, mine is 103 years old now. If you fast-forward 103 years from now, how much better can the vehicle still get? It still has room, right?
“You’re never to the end, and it’s a good reminder to me when I drive [the Model T] around.”
The Car Enthusiast is Going Nowhere
That was when the topic of autonomous cars and robotaxis came up, with the interviewer saying that the future looks like people won’t be driving cars anymore. Logano, however, thinks the future will have both worlds come together. He said:
“There’s probably a placement for that [robotaxis] somewhere, right? And then there’s there’s still going to be the car enthusiast, right?
“Like you and I, that love the thrill of driving a vehicle. Whether it’s just on the open road with the top down or at a racetrack pushing it to its very edge. There’s still always going to be that desire inside the human, I believe.
“And and you’re talking to someone that absolutely loves cars, right? I don’t think that the styling and the performance and all those type of things that we all love about cars is just going to go away.
“There may be some different things to sprinkle in there. But I think we’re still going to like badass cars. That’s important to us.”
