It may seem wild to compare the Jeep Gladiator and Hyundai Santa Cruz. These trucks have massive differences to consider. However, they share an odd similarity that should boost sales. Instead, they continue to struggle against rivals.Â
The Hyundai Santa Cruz and Jeep Gladiator share one thing
The Jeep Gladiator and Hyundai Santa Cruz might be better trucks than you think. Both models are tied for the top spot on the J.D.Power Initial Quality Study. Then Nissan Frontier slides in for a close second place.
This study ranks vehicles based on vehicle repairs to determine quality. A 227-question survey covers the infotainment tech, features, controls, displays, exterior, driver assistance, interior, powertrain, seats, driving experience, and climate.
Then the vehicles and autobrand receive a score based on problems per 100 owners. A lower score means a vehicle has better quality.
But quality isn’t helping Jeep and Hyundai sell trucks. The Jeep Gladiator ended 2024 with 42,123 sales. Meanwhile, the Toyota Tacoma ended 2024 with 192,813 sales.Â
In 2024, the Hyundai Santa Cruz sold 32,033 trucks, and the Ford Maverick sold 131,124 units. They aren’t even close to the class leaders.
People are obsessed with the Maverick because of its hybrid powertrain and its American, despite being made in Mexico. But Santa Cruz is more spacious and comfortable.
The Gladiator also has more passenger space than the Tacoma, and it’s the only convertible truck. But their pros aren’t outweighing the cons. Is it time to reconsider your options, or are these trucks beyond saving?
