Most of us haven’t seen a Rivian R1T in the flesh yet, so it’s hard to say how large the truck is. They’re rare, expensive, luxury, electric trucks that started reaching their owners this spring. In pictures, they look big, and they are large. But is the Rivian R1T a midsize truck or a full-size truck?

How large is a midsize truck?

Trucks come in multiple sizes, from the massive full-size beasts like the Chevy Silverado HD or the extra-wide and burly Ford F-150 Raptor, to the compact trucks like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Midsize trucks include the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, and the Toyota Tacoma. Midsize trucks split the difference, yet still offer a lot of capability. For comparison, a midsize Toyota Tacoma is 226 inches long with a double cab, while a full-size Ford F-250 can be as much as 266 inches long.

The R1T, despite looking bigger, is smaller than a Tacoma at 217 inches long. It’s a bit wider, at 79 inches wide, where the Tacoma is 75 inches wide. The R1T is solidly in the midsize truck range but on the smaller end.

The R1T is about eight inches shorter than a 2022 Chevy Colorado, but it’s 17 inches longer than the compact Ford Maverick truck.

It’s bigger on the inside

The Rivian R1T truck has a larger interior than a Toyota Tacoma.

On the inside, the five-seat R1T is bigger than a similar Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma has 39.7 inches of headroom and 42.9 inches of legroom in the front. It also has 60.6 inches of shoulder room and 54.9 inches of front hip room.

It has big truck capability and cost

The Rivian R1T is electric and has monster utility ratings compared to other midsize trucks. For example, it can tow up to 1,100 pounds, while every other midsize truck can tow around 7,000 pounds. It also full-size truck power with its optional four electric motors. It has 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the version of Rivian R1T you pick, it can have 280 to more than 300 miles of range.

While it’s the fastest and most powerful midsize truck, it’s also the most expensive. Its starting price of $67,500 makes it more than two times as expensive as the base versions of other midsize trucks.
