The Toyota Camry earned itself a name as a legendary family sedan that lasts longer than just about any other car on the road. But it kind of went through a really boring slump. It was still the reliable, roomy Toyota passenger car that built its reputation, but it’s been more like a driving appliance.

That is until Toyota decided to bring a bit more attention to this flagship sedan by giving it some style points for the 2020 model year. Especially considering the addition of the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD to the lineup. The new generation of Toyota Camry began with the 2017 model year. But is the new Toyota Camry model really turning heads out in the wild?

Big time style upgrade

With the addition of a new design inside and out, the new Toyota Camry model is looking far more competitive these days. The 2020 model year went out on a limb with the TRD Camry. According to Cars.com, it’s a real head-turner.

In fact, the entire lineup looks nothing like a Toyota Camry––and that’s a good thing. The sporty XSE model looks really great, too. Overall, we are thinking that the new Toyota Camry model is better looking than it’s been in a while. But it’s not just about looks.

The Toyota Camry TRD

For both 2020 and the 2021 model years, the Camry offers its range-topping TRD model. For a car that’s been called an appliance, this added excitement is a much-needed lineup enhancement. Toyota Camry TRD models are bound to turn some head out there.

Other drivers will likely do a double take. “Whoa, wait. That was a Camry?” I’ve actually spoken with a couple owners of the Toyota Camry TRD model who claim that they are stopped and asked about their cars pretty often.

We expect that from something like a Supra GR. Or even a TRD Pro Tacoma, Tundra, or 4Runner in a new TRD Pro color. But the Toyota Camry isn’t exactly thought of as an attention grabber. Apparently, Toyota has seen some success in breaking this mold for the new Toyota Camry model.

What engine does the Toyota Camry TRD model have?

The Toyota Camry TRD model comes equipped with a 301 horsepower V6 engine. It also has a specialized sport-tuned suspension. The driving dynamics of this breakthrough Camry are noticeably different, according to reviews like the one from Car and Driver on the 2021 Toyota Camry.

The Camry also gets a body kit that lends it a sporty style with components like a sleek rear spoiler and dual exhaust tips. The suspension also rests a bit lower than the other models. On the new Toyota Camry model, if you opt for the TRD trim you’ll also see big brake rotors up front. Plus, the TRD Camry gets black 18-inch rims. Additionally, buyers can choose between either summer or all-season tires.

While the new Toyota Camry model isn’t exactly a supercar ready for the track, Toyota has made the 2021 Toyota Camry more compelling after a long run of boring models. It’s still not going to be everyone’s favorite car, but thanks to the TRD trim and other various updates, the Camry remains highly competitive. If you are looking for a sedan that toes the line between practical and exciting, this Toyota passenger car might be right for you.
