Not every version of the standard Tundra comes as a hybrid model. Contrarily, only some of the most expensive variants of the full-size truck can get the fuel economy boost. For the cheapest version of a Tundra Hybrid, you’ll have to buy the Limited trim, which starts at $54,695. According to Edmunds, only the Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and Capstone models are available with a hybrid powertrain. That means no SR or SR5 models, which are the only models under $50,000.

So, is it worth paying all the extra cash for a Tundra Hybrid? Edmunds says the hybrid powertrain outputs 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. That’s much better than the 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft provided by the standard engine setup. Non-hybrid Tundras come with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine; the hybrid is optional on all trims from Limited and up but never standard.

How is the Tundra Hybrid’s fuel economy?

According to Torque News, the 2022 Toyota Tundra hybrid powertrain averages 20 city and 24 highway mpg. As a result, it isn’t much of an improvement over the non-hybrid setup. Buying a Tundra with the standard engine will still land you 18 city and 24 highway mpg. Furthermore, the change in gas mileage using the added electric motor isn’t too noticeable.

It’s easy to see that the Tundra Hybrid isn’t much of an improvement if you’re looking for better fuel economy. However, there are other benefits of the additional electric motor. TN noted that many hybrid systems aren’t meant for better fuel economy but more power instead. That’s why the Tundra finally phased out its V8 engine but replaced it with a V6 or a V6 hybrid. Now, the Tundra Hybrid gets more horsepower, towing capacity, and more without adding those extra cylinders.

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid standard features

According to Edmunds, the cheapest version of the Tundra Hybrid is the Limited trim. As a result, the full-size truck costs $54,695 and has many standard features. For example, 20-inch wheels, simulated leather upholstery, and a digital instrument panel exclusive to the hybrid powertrain. In addition, every Tundra Limited has many luxurious amenities. Things like heated and ventilated front seats, a 14-inch center touchscreen, a power vertical-sliding rear window, a tailgate release button, and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Upgrading to the Platinum model upgrades the Tundra even more. Things like a JBL premium audio system, heated and ventilated rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof are nice to have. Furthermore, the Capstone trim is the best of the best, competing with the most luxurious full-size trucks available. It adds 22-inch wheels, Capstone-exclusive trim details, power-deploying running boards, sound-reducing front windows, a head-up display, and more.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid worth buying?

In conclusion, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid will cost you at least $54,695. Compared to models like the Ford F-150, that’s a little expensive. The F-150 XLT is available with a hybrid powertrain and is much more affordable, starting at $45,910. However, the Tundra Limited is well-equipped and adds valuable power. In short, it depends on what you’re looking for in a full-size truck. If you need slightly better fuel economy and a power boost, the Tundra Hybrid is worth the upgrade.
