Late one night Sheriff Deputies in Pinellas County Florida received reports of a rear-ending. When they arrived on the scene they questioned 38-year-old Amy Harrington who had bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, and was “unsteady on her feet.” So they asked the driver to complete a field sobriety test. But they didn’t expect what happened next. [Bodycam footage below].

When a police officer asked Harrington to walk a line, she began to dance instead.

The officer asked, “Do you want to pay attention so I can give you the instructions?”

Harrington joked, “Yeah, well, you sound like my ballet coach.” And as if inspired by the comment, she abandoned walking the line after five steps and began a ballet sequence.

The deputy tried to bring her back to the taks at hand. “That wasn’t the exercise that I was demonstrating.”

This time, Harrington didn’t even bother responding. She left into an Irish folk dance instead. The police report specifies that she continued with “multiple ballet and Irish folk dance moves.”

Harrington refused any further tests. But when the deputies investigated, they found a foam cup that smelled like alcohol in her center console. So she’s been charged with a DUI and property damage.

You can see teh entire body cam video of her impromptu dance session in the video below:

Harrington is far from the only driver to begin dancing during a field sobriety test. Columbus resident Dale Bentley famously put on a dance show for police during a 2015 field sobriety test. Florida driver Christopher Larson broke into a series of dances during his own field sobriety test in 2019. Both men were subsequently arrested for DUIs.

So does dancing your way through a field sobriety test work? Three for three, it appears to do the opposite, only convincing police that you’re drunk. So don’t try this move.

It’s apparently such a common scenario that Comedy Central filmed a “Drunk Catwalk” sketch with a cowboy breaking into a line dance during a traffic stop. The officer even compliments the man’s dancing before the driver admits that he’d never be able to boogey like that while sober–the slip-up landing him a DUI.
