Hyundai and General Motors might build trucks and EVs together
Hyundai and General Motors have been thinking about joining forces to build trucks and electric vans. They’ve been meeting up to have wild discussions for mutual benefits soon.
According to Reuters, Hyundai might provide GM with two electric vans. In return, GM might give Hyundai pickup trucks to sell. All of the vehicles would be available in North America.
These are two of the largest automakers in the world and this could be the start of a long-lasting relationship. The automakers are discussing deals that involve joint purchase and development of computing chips, next-generation batteries, and battery materials.
Joining forces could help the two battle rising competition against Chinese EV brands and the potential global trade war. Sharing resources may reduce costs.
The Hyundai vans could be sold under its brand and GM brands like GMC and Chevrolet. They would be imported from South Korea. However, it might build the vans in North America by 2028.
Reports suggest that Hyundai is considering building a new manufacturing plant, adding production to an existing facility, or contracting out manufacturing.
So far, GM is focused on sharing mid-size trucks like the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado. However, Hyundai is interested in full-size trucks too, but GM hasn’t made it that far yet. Making a truck deal will probably take longer to finalize than a commercial van project.
