You might already know that electric car batteries, in general, can be pretty heavy. However, the new 2022 GMC Hummer EV takes it to the next level. The truck weighs around 9,000 pounds total, but almost a third of that is the EV battery alone. Thanks to Car and Driver, we know the electric Hummer pickup truck’s Ultium battery pack weighs 2,923 on its own.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is really heavy
You’d think that removing all the components of a gas-powered vehicle would make it really light in weight. However, the Ultium battery might be as heavy as all those components anyway. For example, according to It Still Runs, the original Hummer H1 weighed between 7,700 and 8,500 pounds. That’s roughly 500 to over 1,000 pounds less than the new electric pickup truck variant.
That seems surprising, but the battery explains it all. The EV version would be significantly lighter than its namesake without the battery. Is this kind of weight normal for electric car batteries? Or is GM’s Ultium battery hefty compared to the competition?
How much do car batteries weigh?
As it turns out, the weight of the Hummer EV battery isn’t too bad compared to other models. According to Weight of Stuff, the Tesla Model S battery weighs 1,200 pounds. However, the Tesla Model 3 uses a 1,060-pound battery. While the Hummer EV uses a much heavier battery, it doesn’t seem that bad, considering vehicle size. Overall, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV is significantly larger than both of these Tesla models, so of course, it needs a larger battery.
As for vehicles closer in size, the Ford F-150 Lightning is also lighter. More specifically, it’s 2,500 pounds lighter than the Hummer EV, according to The Drive. It is worth noting that the Hummer in question uses a tri-motor drivetrain and the Lightning only a dual-motor setup. That’s where most of the extra weight comes from, even if the battery is a bit bulkier.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck costs over $100,000, so it needs power
All that being said, the big battery and tri-motor setup are there to power this massive vehicle. It takes a lot to get something of this size moving quickly, and that’s precisely what GM was able to do. The truck’s chief engineer once told The Drive that the Hummer EV prototype could pop wheelies. Of course, the automaker needed to stop that before production for safety reasons.
In the end, it’s a 1,000 horsepower pickup truck that can go from 0 to 60 in around 3 seconds. That’s the type of speed and ability that helps it compete with titans like the Tesla Cybertruck of the future. So much so that its speed and features like crab-walking could be why the Cybertruck still isn’t available.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is heavy, and so is its battery
In conclusion, with great power comes tremendous amounts of weight. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck is a heavy vehicle with a hefty battery. It weighs nearly 3,000 pounds, which is one-third of its total weight. Can we expect similar weights in smaller vehicles using the Ultium battery from GM? Probably not, since the Hummer has 1,000 horsepower and a tri-motor drivetrain.
