The time has finally come. Nissan has given us an inside look at the 2022 Nissan Frontier. And, you know what? It has a lot going for it. Redesigned for the new model year, this year’s Nissan Frontier isn’t making any compromises. It’s powerful, stock full of features, and ready to tow. But just how much can the redesigned Nissan Frontier tow? Let’s find out.

Check out what’s under the hood of the 2022 Nissan Frontier

First, let’s talk about what’s under the hood of the 2022 Nissan Frontier. This year’s model comes standard with a 310-hp 3.8-liter direct-injection V6 engine. This particular engine was all-new for 2020 and benefited from a ton of both new and redesigned parts. It also offers best-in-class horsepower ratings, which is really nothing to scoff at.

Also standard is a 9-speed automatic transmission that Nissan says has been designed to maximize efficiency while also providing “strong acceleration.” The Frontier’s transmission also boasts an expanded lockup area, a new high-response electro-hydraulic system, a long input shaft, and a 99% wider gear range. All in all, Nissan says, you can expect the Frontier’s 9-speed automatic transmission to offer crisp, direct shift responses throughout the truck’s entire gear range.

How much weight will the 2022 Nissan Frontier tow?

While that’s all well and good, for many pickup shoppers, what’s most important is how much a truck can actually tow. So, how much can you expect the 2022 Nissan Frontier to pull? According to Nissan, the 2022 Nissan Frontier’s towing capacity is rated at up to 6,720-pounds. But to achieve such a number, the Frontier must be properly equipped. Nissan says that you can expect the Frontier to accommodate a 1,610-pound payload too.

The redesigned Frontier benefits from some new standard towing features as well. Unlike previous model years, the 2022 Nissan Frontier comes standard with trailer sway control. This handy feature is designed to detect sways. And when it does? It automatically applies the brakes to eliminate them.

Can you count on the 2022 Nissan Frontier to tow a camper?

Now, the Nissan Frontier’s 6,720-pounds towing capacity is pretty reasonable. But does that mean you can count on this year’s redesigned model to have the strength needed to tow a camper? After all, summer is just around the corner.

To figure that out, you first have to consider the average weight of a camper. According to Camper Report, you can expect an average camper trailer to weigh in at around 5,200-pounds. And that’s before you fill the tanks or pack it with any of your gear. Do that and Camper Report says that you can expect to add 1,500-pounds to get a “real world” example of how much the average camper weighs.

Assuming Camper Reports’ calculations are on point, that means the average camper weighs in at about 6,700-pounds. While that number is less than the Frontier’s maximum towing capacity, it’s still cutting things pretty close.

You’re going to want to take this year’s redesigned model out for a test drive

If you’re in the market for a shiny new pickup that’s able to tow a reasonable amount, the 2022 Nissan Frontier is definitely worth checking out. So why not head to your local dealership for a test drive?
