President Donald Trump’s address to Congress made national news after House Speaker Mike Johnson had a congressman removed mere minutes into Trump’s speech. However, the wildness didn’t stop there for the Speaker. Police arrested Mike Johnson’s chief of staff, Hayden Haynes, for a DUI less than an hour after the speech.

Police arrested Hayden Haynes, chief of staff to House Speaker Mike Johnson, for a DUI after he hit a parked car

Washington D.C.’s Capitol Police responded to a report of a collision between a vehicle and a parked car. However, when they arrived, they found House Speaker Mike Johnson’s chief of staff, Hayden Haynes, behind the wheel. Police then arrested Haynes for the crime of driving under the influence (DUI).

The arrest took place not long after President Donald Trump wrapped up his 99-minute speech to Congress on Tuesday, per the New York Post. The Speaker made headlines at the event for ordering the sergeant-at-arms to eject Texas Congressman Al Green from the session minutes into Trump’s speech.

However, that wasn’t the end of the day’s drama for Johnson. 45 minutes after Trump’s congressional address, Haynes backed into a parked car, prompting a response from the city’s Capitol Police. Haynes was over the legal limit when he backed into the other vehicle. In Washington D.C., the legal limit for adult drivers is a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%. Anything above that BAC will land a driver, even a chief of staff, in handcuffs.

The Speaker still has ‘full faith’ in Haynes following the DUI

Taylor Haulsee, a spokesperson for Mike Johnson, said the Speaker still has confidence in Haynes following the DUI arrest. “The Speaker is aware of the encounter that occurred last night involving his Chief of Staff and the Capitol Police,” Haulsee said in a statement. The spokesperson went on to say that Johnson “has full faith and confidence in Hayden’s ability to lead the Speaker’s office.”

In typical Washington D.C. DUI cases, punishments often won’t involve jail time unless it’s a repeat offense or a high BAC, like 0.20 or higher. However, at least for now, it appears the DUI arrest will not impact Haynes’ position with House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office.
