If you think that Honda only builds efficient cars, then you’re in for a surprise. The automaker is creeping into Tesla territory but rivaling SpaceX with a successful reusable rocket launch. Your grandkids could use a Honda rocket to exit the atmosphere one day.
Honda celebrates a successful reusable rocket launch
Honda might be doing more than you know. Forget its lineup of reliable cars, trucks, and SUVs today because it’s time to talk about its rocket.
The automaker is proud to share that it successfully launched and landed a reusable rocket. It reached 900 feet before returning to Earth to rival SpaceX. After launching in Hokkaido, Japan, the craft made a flight that lasted roughly a minute before reaching the target touchdown point.
The test rocket is called the reusable launch vehicle or RLV. It’s only 6.3 meters high and weighs 2,892 when filled with fuel.
According to PC Mag, the Space X Falcon 9 has completed 500 missions, including the deployment of thousands of Starlink satellites. So, Honda still has some work to do to catch up.
But the Japanese company has no plans of slowing down. Its research is still in the fundamental phase and it’s aiming to achieve a suborbital launch by 2029.
The launch was held to demonstrate key technologies essential for rocket reusabilities, like flight stability during ascent and descent, as well as landing capability.
There is a growing need for greater utilization of a data system in other space through expanded satellite use. The need for satellite launch rockets is expected to increase.
