Why are so many Kias and Hyundais stolen?
In the early 2020s, car thieves discovered new techniques to steal many Hyundai and Kia vehicles. They took to TikTok to make instructional videos and some cities saw a 45% increase in auto theft immediately.
According to the Detroit Police Department, the city saw about 130 Kia and Hyundai vehicles stolen in 2021. By the end of 2022, that number had spiked to 1,400. Theft numbers have fallen slightly, with 1,000 fewer overall in 2024 (compared to 2022). But theft numbers are still higher than 2020.
Why the dramatic increase in thefts? TikTok users have been posting videos on how to steal these cars, and footage of stunts performed with stolen cars under hashtags such as “Kia Boys” and “Kia Challenge.” This makes stealing the cars seem trendy, and may be inspiring car thieves who aren’t looking for financial gain, just clout.
Are Hondas stolen often?
In 2024, there were 18,539 Honda Accords reported stolen in the USA. That means it was stolen more than any Kia model. There were also 15,727 Honda Civics stolen.
With Kias a “trendy” car to target, it may surprise you to hear that more Honda Accords are stolen. But the truth is that Hondas are valuable and plentiful. This makes them common targets as well.
