Heroic Colorado Officer Saves Newborn’s Life in Terrifying Roadside Rescue

Commuting can throw some wild, unpredictable scenarios your way, but absolutely nothing prepares you for a frantic parent abandoning her vehicle in the middle of an intersection to beg for help. That’s exactly what happened recently in Aurora, Colorado, when a standard stoplight evolved into a literal life-or-death emergency.

Earlier this month, a mother was desperately rushing to the local hospital because her one-week-old infant had suddenly stopped breathing. Stuck at a red light, she spotted a police cruiser idling nearby. Operating on pure adrenaline and sheer panic, she jumped out of her car and ran over to the patrol vehicle for help.

Officer Jerry Padilla didn’t hesitate. Recognizing how bad the situation must be, he immediately took the tiny newborn and initiated CPR right there in the roadway. For five agonizing minutes, the policeman worked to keep the child alive while waiting for an ambulance to navigate through the traffic.

Even after emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and took over the rescue, the officer’s job was far from over. Padilla became a Spanish interpreter as he translated the baby’s mum for the paramedics.

“In the moment you don’t think of what’s going on, you kind of just act,” Padilla said via KDVR. “It’s such a rush moment that you don’t really have time to have any emotions or think. You just act.”

A Rare and Heartwarming Reunion

Authorities later revealed they suspect the infant was choking on baby formula. Fortunately, this terrifying moment had a beautiful conclusion.

Just weeks after the the scary moment on the road, the police department arranged a reunion between the hero cop and the now-healthy child. The department posted the following to its Facebook page:

“Reunited. A rarity in law enforcement.

“But something we were able to make happen for Officer Padilla, baby boy and his mother.

“Remember the video we shared earlier this week? It showed one of our heroic officers doing what he was called to do: save lives and protect this community.

“Officers Padilla gave CPR to a week-old baby for nearly 5-minutes before EMS and AFR arrived on scene that night.

“Yesterday, he was reunited with the now one-month-old little boy.

“A reunion with a life he saved.

“A chance for a mother to say thank you.

“A moment that reminds us exactly why this profession matters.”
