Ford recently announced it will open ordering for the 2023 Maverick in September. In addition to the same features and packages on the 2022 Maverick, the 2023 truck gets Ford’s popular Tremor package. But why is that such a big deal?

What is Ford’s Tremor Off-Road Package?

Available on the Ford F-150 and Super Duty trucks, the Tremor Off-Road Package combines an appearance package with enhanced off-road capability. It’s an option for the 2023 Ford Maverick XLT and Lariat models and includes a one-inch lift, off-road tailored suspension, and Trail Control.

According to Torque News, the addition of Trail Control “will be the biggest single enabler of the Tremor Maverick to go further on adventures.” But what is Trail Control, and why is it a big deal?

What is the Trail Control feature?

Trail Control allows the driver to set a speed for off-road driving. The truck then maintains that speed, managing the throttle and braking while the driver focuses on driving through difficult terrain. It works similarly to cruise control, only at much lower speeds.

Previously, Torque News tested Trail Control on a Ford Bronco Sport and found that it works as advertised. They took the Bronco Sport on steep, slippery hills and downhill trails in their test. They learned that it’s different from Hill Decent Control in that Hill Decent Control only controls the brakes to maintain a set speed going downhill. Trail Control takes care of both braking and throttle input and can be used when climbing or descending.

Why is the 2023 Ford Maverick getting Trail Control such a big deal?

Todd Eckert, Ford’s Truck Product Marketing and Brand Manager, says the “Maverick Tremor delivers on this same promise with new functions and features designed for off-roading – all while keeping the truck’s signature size, affordability, and Built Ford Tough durability and capability.”

As a whole, the Tremor Package further enhances the 2023 Ford Maverick’s off-road capability. MotorTrend tested a 2022 Maverick with the FX4 Off-Road package last year and found it respectable but not without compromise. Ground clearance was adequate, but the Maverick lacked more capable trucks’ approach and departure angles, including the Ford Ranger. As a result, the Maverick’s front and rear bumpers were always much closer to scraping the mud when going up or down steep hills. Put a wheel wrong or carry too much speed, and you could get stuck, or worse, carrying your bumpers home in your truck bed.

The Tremor Package aims to fix these issues. The one-inch increase in ride height improves ground clearance and approach and departure angles. Trail Control helps keep you on your intended path, preventing you from going too fast or losing control as you tackle more challenging terrain.

How much will the Tremor Package cost?

The Tremor Off-Road Package adds $2,995 to the MSRP of the 2023 Ford Maverick XLT or Lariat trim levels and will be available in September. The package also includes advanced all-wheel drive with four-wheel-drive lock and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.
