Hyundai does luxury surprisingly well with its Genesis line of powerful, luxury sedans. Now, the South Korean automaker will be expanding beyond l sedans and into crossover SUVs. By 2021, the Genesis models will include six vehicles instead of the current three.

The GV70 is one of these anticipated luxury SUVs, and Hyundai is keeping a lot of the details under wraps. However, thanks to some spy photography and insider info, there are a few things we think we know about the Genesis GV70. Overall, it appears the upcoming Genesis GV70 will essentially be a crossover version of the current G70 sports sedan.

The Hyundai GV70 concept

The GV70 will have a bold look with unique details. In front, is a large, hexagon mesh grille, LED split headlamps, and a stylish crease in the middle of the hood. Similar to the Hyundai Palisade, the new crossover features glittering chrome work down the C-pillars and a striking shoulder line, giving the luxury SUV an aggressively sporty look. A large rear diffuser in the rear along with dual exhaust hint at the power under the hood. Split taillights and a steep rear hatch complete the dramatic rear styling.

The interior of the Genesis GV70 will surround the driver in rich luxury. There are no current photos of the interior, but since it is very similar to an updated G70 sedan, it should feature an upscale digital instrument cluster and a tablet-like, touchscreen display. Interior design elements will reflect the sleek exterior, with rounded shapes and flowing lines. Piano black trim is featured throughout the cockpit, with luxurious top-quality leather upholstery.

Technology in the upcoming Hyundai Genesis line

The driver and vehicle are completely in sync with fully integrated technologies in the current Genesis line. The GV70 will likely feature the same Heads-Up Display, touchscreen navigation, and Surround View Monitor which gives you a complete, 360 view of the world outside. Seamless integration with Android and iPhone smartphones means you’ll always be in touch with what’s important to you while keeping your eyes on the road. Other technology features to expect include:

  • Wireless charging
  • Premium audio system
  • Hands-free smart hatch release
  • Forward collision avoidance assist
  • Blind-spot collision warning

Another Hyundai advancement found in the Genesis line is Smart Cruise Control. This system will let the GV70’s front-mounted radar to detect the car ahead and automatically maintain a safe distance. It can even handle traffic, coming to a full stop and restarting when cars begin to move again.

The Hyundai GV70 is based on the identical platform as the G70 sedan. It’s safe to speculate that their powertrains will also be the same. This means the GV0 will potentially sport a 2.0-liter turbo putting out over 252 horsepower, a new turbocharged 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine, and a twin-turbo 3/3-liter V6, delivering a solid 365 horsepower. There is an unconfirmed possibility of a plug-in hybrid model.

A smooth-shifting, 8-speed automatic transmission is also featured in the G70 and will likely be mated to all engines in the GV70. The Shift-by-Wire, SHIFTRONIC transmission has steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for sportscar-like control, and rev-matching confidently handles all shift points. Available Brembo brakes give the driver incredible stopping power and a better sense of safety and security.

The G70 sport sedan boasts a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system with Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control. Drivers can expect the same enhanced stability and quick response in the GV70 crossover. The GV70’s North American debut is scheduled for 2021 when it will compete with luxury crossover vehicles such as the BMW X4, Volvo XC60, Infiniti QX50, and Audi Q5.
