You know that project car that’s been on jack stands in your garage for longer than you’d like to admit? Well according to a recent recall, it may put you at risk. And I don’t mean risk of embarrassment, I mean of injury or even death. It turns out Harbor Freight had to recall three models of “Pittsburgh” jack stands because the ratchet mechanism can fail under load, making them collapse. Here are the models:

  • Pittsburgh 3 Ton (Harbor Freight Item #56371)
  • Heavy Duty Pittsburgh 3 Ton (Harbor Freight Item #61196)
  • Heavy Duty Pittsburgh 6 Ton (Harbor Freight Item #61197)

A different make and model of car gets recalled most every day. Tool recalls are a bit more rare. But with many DIY mechanics trusting their life to jack stands, Harbor Freight couldn’t risk leaving faulty ones in circulation. If you bring any of the affected jack stands into a Harbor Freight store, you’ll get a gift card equal to their original price plus local sales tax. You don’t need to present a receipt.

Harbor Freight began this recall in 2021, but it has no expiration date. The store will continue offering refunds for the unsafe jack stands until they are all out of circulation.

The affected jack stands include a red-colored, Pittsburgh brand 3-ton model. The recall also includes two heavy duty models which come in gunmetal gray. They are the 3-ton and 6-ton model. You can see the recalled models for yourself in the video embedded below:
