Gummy bear DoorDash gone wrong ends in 125 mph police chase
Who orders gummy bears from DoorDash at 4:40 AM? That should have been a major red flag for a driver named Joshua. He was working late one Saturday, trying to save some money for himself and his pregnant girlfriend, when two teenagers stole his Dodge Charger. And that was just the beginning of the nightmare.
A gummy bear delivery goes sideways
While driving for DoorDash in the Detroit metro area, Joshua received a 4 AM request for gummy bears in Southfield, Michigan. He dutifully picked up the candy and drove out to The Lakes Apartments. But when he got out of his car to make the delivery, a not-so-sweet surprise was waiting: two men wearing masks. Joshua said, “When I looked to my right, the male on the outside pointed the gun right at me… I just ran, I didn’t think about it.”
Joshua wasn’t risking being shot. “I’m thankful I’m alive because my girlfriend is 13 weeks pregnant, and I’m 20 years old. So the only thing I was thinking about was me not being there for my kid.”
Dodge Charger carjackers speed through Detroit
Eighteen-year-old Derek Butler hopped in the Dodge Charger with his unnamed 17-year-old accomplice—and sped off. Joshua called 911. He said, “I’m panicking right now, sir.” He explained the aftermath of the late-night gummy bear delivery: “I was door dashing and my car got stolen, sir.”
The chase was on. The Southfield Police Department caught up with the car thieves and pursued them. Butler didn’t pull over. He sped up.
Police say the speed hit a whopping 125 miles per hour. Butler’s driving endangered anyone else on the road. With early morning commuters hitting the highway, police knew they needed to stop him. They carefully struck the rear end of the Charger in what’s called a PIT maneuver. Butler spun out, struck the side of the highway, and came to a stop.
Police charged Butler with carjacking, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and fleeing and eluding. His bail is set at $250,000. His juvenile accomplice is charged with carjacking and carrying a concealed weapon.
Joshua said of his wrecked car, “It’s heartbreaking seeing it.” But he added, “I’m happy I’m alive. So much hard work went into that car, but my life is more important.” So what about the gummy bears?
It turns out the odd DoorDash order had nothing to do with the carjackers. “It’s funny, it was just gummy bears. But after I called the lady—after the police—I seen her walking to me and I just wanted to make sure she got her Dash.”
